Balbir Singh Dance Company exists to create dynamic dance through a synthesis of Kathak, live music and Contemporary dance. Balbir Singh Dance Company, established in 1997 as Diversity Dance, changed its name in 2008 to reflect the fact that its sole purpose is to create and present the work of Balbir Singh.

The work stems from the dual training Balbir Singh received in the fields of Kathak and Contemporary dance and his subsequent interest in exploring the creative potential of synthesising the two forms. Always working with original live music, the work challenges dancers to explore their musicality as well as their physicality and draws on the holistic relationship between Kathak dance and music.

explores movement along a spectrum scale between two points – Kathak and Contemporary dance. The work represents a percentage mix of influences, principles, ideas and essences of the two styles.
Two dance forms influence each other, starting in their purest form seen through abstract mirrors. They are attracted to each other and slowly influenced until they meet and neither style of dance exists but something new…
Classical Indian and Contemporary dance forms confidently collide. Dancers and musicians intrude on each other’s territory and produce beautiful combinations.
Balbir Singh Dance Company has been commissioned by imove to develop a project over the next three years involving synchronised swimmers and dancers. The work will explore what is involved in choreography and training for synchronised swimmers, and what happens to Classical Indian and Contemporary trained dancers working in water.
